The mini-mental state examination is a short test use to assess basic cognitive function and assisn a score. The raw score can be use to aid in the diagnosis of conditions resulting in cognitive impairment, such as:

The test is commonly used to monitor the course of cognitive changes in an individual over time and response to treatment (for example drugs use to treat dementia).

Test procedure

Questions and instructions:

Orientation 5 1 point each correct What is the: (year) (season) (date) (day of week) (month)?
Orientation 5 1 point each correct Where are we: (state) (city) (suburb) (hospital/clinic) (floor/ward)?
Registration 3 1 point each correct Name three objects (e.g. table, clock, chair)
Ask patient to repeat them (1 point each correct)
Continue repeating them until all three are learned
Attention and calculation 5 1 point each correct Serial 7s. Subtract 7 from 100: 100→93→86→79→72→65
Stop after five
Alternatively spell 'world' backwards
Recall 3 1 point each correct Ask for the three objects repeated above
Language 2 1 point each correct Point to two objects and ask the names
e.g. pencil, watch
Language 1 1 point if no errors Repeat the following: 'No ifs, ands, or buts' - 1 point
Language 3 1 point each correct component Follow a three-stage command:
'Take a paper in your right hand, fold it in half, and put it on the floor'
Language 1 1 point if obeys correctly Write 'CLOSE YOUR EYES' on a paper and show it to the patient
Language 1 1 point if contains subject, verb and object and makes sense Ask patient to write a sentence
Complex commands 1 1 point if figures both have 5 sides and interlock Draw two interlocking pentagons, ask patient to copy them
